Media blog Post 11 - Mainstream vs Independent.

There is a difference between mainstream audiences and independent audiences. However the term 'audience' is a group of people that consume media. This ranges from youtube videos and TV to social media.

However there are differences between the two different two types of audiences for the two types of media.

Mainstream

Mainstream audiences usually come in masses. Looking at One Direction , the multi million dollar boy band , they have legions and legions of fans even if they are prominently women.
Millions and millions of people buy their tickets and see their shows , they have sold out arenas around the world time and time again and that is because of the vast numbers of people that know their music. Through methods like youtube , people watch their videos and in turn buy their concert tickets. This is an advantage of being mainstream because you have the ability to spread your music across many forms of media for example iTunes or Facebook and millions of people like , share and watch their content.

However mainstream isn't always the best way to go , especially for an artist who cares more about the music and their content than the money and the shows. There is also risk of being taken advantage of that audiences don't see nor do they probably care. For example One direction have indeed made millions but who has benefited from them more. The boys or the man that put them together. It is well documented that Simon Cowell has made a boatload of money , much more than the boys themselves. Between the members of one direction they have 70 million dollars. Simon Cowell on his own has 500 million dollars. Now granted he has been around for a long time but seeing how One Direction were his biggest success most of that probably was accumulated from them. There is also a lack of freedom in mainstream.

Independent
There is a lot more freedom here. For example UK grime artists are mostly independent which is why some of the songs are graphic. There is no one telling them what to do , what to write and who to pander to. This has made independent and independent labels more popular because they aren't as big so there isn't as huge a expectation. For example Lanterns on the Lake are independently signed. This probably has allowed them to have a more creative freedom and approach to their music as opposed to one direction.

However this also means it is much more difficult to promote and get their music out as their audience isn't that huge. They rely more on social media to get it out because that can be shared to the general public and someone may click on it and like it.
