9) Individual analysis of costume, setting and location in Music videos

                   Analysing costume, setting and location.

The Music genre I will be analying is Grime. As this will be the genre this group will perform to. This is a predominate genre in the UK Scene on music. And is slowly but surely spreading onto a global platform. Here’s some history about Grime. This emerged in the early 2000s' as a result to the UK Garage genre.

When you watch Grime videos, there are usually similar types of costume, location and setting. It is typical for a grime video to consist of a block or flats/ in a council estate/ rural area. This could be down to the upbringing of the artist, as most of grime artist grew up in council housing, and it’s used to portray their authentic-ness. As it’s true to their art. They tend to have fancy car/motorbikes and now segway boards.

You are most likely to see a group of boys (mandem):

And  maybe a couple of girls somewhere through the video, either just there like the other boys in the background: See the girl in the white behind Skepta. She's like one of the guys.

Or as what Laura Mulvey's theory of the representation of women, as being subject of the male gaze:

In this video you see at 2.53-2.55(minutes) a female run across the screen in the slow motion effect, Showing off her booty, for what seems a short time, actually is long enough to see it. And it's smart in the sense that at that specific moment the lyrics of the verse was also talking about that.

This shows that
Muvley's theory isn't always the case. Some videos don't show women like that, whiles some videos do. More so it has something to do with the lyrics. Its likely that if the lyric has something to do with the sexualisation of women, then you are bound to see it. But if it doesn't then you probably won't see it. It's wrong to assume that this is something that is fixed and universal. Its a good thing to see it as a selective approach to women.

In terms of costumes, its usually of well known brands such as Nike/Addias, as they are very active when it comes to having grime artists promote their brand via a sponsorship.

Artist Stormzy literally only wears Adidas as he's sponsored by the company. He has become well know for his various adidas products, from trainers, to tracksuits etc.

Other Grime artist also where branded clothing for upcoming cloth lines, such as Dichino or Cash Motto: Chip/Chipmunk wears CM products as its his own line of clothing.

Its clear to see that these genre are extremely trending because they set the bar for the UK urban swag. And to be quite frank they're doing a bloody well job at it.
