9. Analysis of Costume, Setting and Location

Costume, Setting and Locations are features that can make or break a music video. These three features vary depending on what type of music video it is and what genre the music video is a part of it. For instance an Indie music video would be focused on the band and the instruments they play. In this blog I will be analyzing UK rap/Grime videos.

Grime has been around in the UK since the early 2000's. It's generally seen as a genre for the underground. Platforms like Chanel AKA (then Chanel U) have been promoting Grime music for years now.

Setting
It is common for Grime videos to have similar costumes, settings and location. They are all commonly in Estates and blocks (often these blocks and estates are actually where the artist in the video is from). The estates and blocks creates a real gritty, urban atmosphere about the music video. Many artists in the grime scene keep their videos simplistic and just have their friends and associates (commonly males) in their videos. However there are a few that contrast this by having blocks and estates but driving through them in fancy, race cars and flashy clothes and jewelry.

Costume
The costume of most Grime videos are often the same. The artist is either dressed in simplistic clothes like a tracksuit, hoodie, jumper, jeans etc. or they are dressed very fashionably in expensive clothing with lots of jewelry. It often various on the artist, but the two categories for Grime videos are extremely expensive or very simple.
