6. Laura Mulvey Theory

Laura Mulvey was a feminist that took a critical view of music videos in this modern era. Laura Mulvey's theory is based on how she believes that women are 'objectified' in music videos. She makes the claims that women have been made to simply look attractive and sexy in music videos rather than have any other impact. She feels that now, in this generation, a women's physical features is what decides whether they are successful or not. She believes that the objectification of women is something that is universal in all music genre's, however it is extremely potent in the hip hop and R&B music categories.

Take Nicki Minaj for instance. She has made millions, won many awards and is a well known figure world wide. However, Laura Mulvey would make the claim that her rise to greatness is largely down to how she exploits her body figure. People like Nicki Minaj have been advised to make use of her beauty in order to reach success. Mulvey would make the claim that this shouldn't be the way women should be successful
in the music industry,

Dizee Rascal 'Holiday' is a great example of Mulvey's argument. There are various points in the music video where the men are just focusing on the women and their bodies. Even the camera work is fixed on the female body rather than her face.
