What is an audience?
An audience is the individual or group or people that consume a media context. Which is through listening, watching, reading.
Their importance?
Without an audience there will be no function for any media product, because no one will know of it or have any interest towards it. They are also useful in terms of generating profit for those whom create the context. So due to the influence of an audience, this creates competition for the providers, in order for them to attract the most people and to make the most revenue.
Through to the change in technology, there's a big difference from old and new media. Old media consists of Newspapers/Radio/Magazines/TV. Whereas, new media consists of digital technology. This is the use of things like animations. Via the influence of the internet and social media.
Mass audience?
This is the group of people that are usually referred to as "broadcasting audience". They are the people that watch soaps and/or sitcom. They target a massive amount of people.
E.G: Eastenders / Top Gear / The Guardian
Niche audience?
This is slightly different to those of a mass audience, as it extremely specific and is only for a particular group of people. Which is why is it also smaller than an mass audience.
Mainstream music.
This is an example of mass media. These are the type of songs you hear on the radio, on charts like Top 40 or MTV. In terms of UK Artists, those who usually do mainstream music are the people that have successfully "blown". Which means in other words, they are popular and trending in the general public. A prime example of an UK artist that has blown is Tinie Tempah. When he first started in the music industry he was a upcoming grime artist. and over time he has emerged into a pop artist. Which could be because now he's signed to major record labels and he's a international star now. It is so much easier for those artist that produce mainstream music, as they have the support of big companies and the money to get their music everywhere, from TV music channels, to on the radio, to the net. They have more advertising than those of an independent music.
Independent music.
This is when artists are usually not signed to a major label and produce everything with a set of collective people.
