4. Andrew Goodwin Theory

Andrew Goodwin's theory was based around how the music video industry had changed. He believed that music videos had changed from being based around traditional narrative structures to now being based around the song lyrics.

He believed that nowadays, in most mainstream videos, the singer is usually used as both a narrator and a character, rather than being focused on one of these roles as was the case in the past.

He felt that it was now also common for the singer to break the 4th wall by looking directly into the camera.

Disjuncture - This is where the song lyrics barely resemble what is being shown in the video. The video and what the artist is singing about have little to no connection. In Ed Sheeran's 'You need me', he is talking about not relying on people but the majority of the video is just people in front of a dark background

Illustration - This is the complete contrast with disjuncture, the song tells the story and the music video is the visual annotation of this. In Krept and Konan 'My Story' they do what the title suggests and sing about their story, the visual pictures also do the exact same thing.

Amplification - This is where the song and the story coincide. The video adds more depth to what the song lyrics are based around. For example, Kendrick Lamar 'Alright' is based around people being well off and happy in life, the video compliments this.

Media Blog Post 9 - Individual Costume Analysis

In grime videos there is usually a very similar trend. Most follow the formula of having branded clothes , cars , a group of males in dark colors , people smoking and usually a cage/car park or estate.

Costume
Watching grime videos their clothes are usually similar. Some of the brands most notably seen are Nike , Adidas or The North Face. Often wearing a lesser respected or worn brand can help rejuvenate it depending on the popularity of the artist/artists for example Section Boyz (a music group from south London) all wore Puma tracksuits and in the following weeks Puma tracksuits could be seen all over London. Often brands sponsor artists as well for example UK artists Stormzy and Adidas have a well known relationship. He gains a lot of clothes and shoes in exchange for advertising their clothes.

Props
Grime content is usually about the hardships of growing up in south London. A lot of grime artists came from gangs or gang affiliation which explains why their lyrics often project that way of life. Another way they show that life is through props. Props often seen in these videos include drugs - Marijuana mostly , 'Bandoes' (A house in which weed is grown and sold) , cars , chains and sometimes knives and lighters. Props such as chains and cars and bikes are a visual for all the money they make and gain from selling weed. However despite what can be seen as a negative message their videos are more often that not always well received for example 'Trapping ain't dead' and 'not that deep'.

Settings
Urban locations make up the setting for the majority of grime video locations. Estates , 'Bandoes' , cages , car parks and shopping centers are usually where you'll see them being shot. South bank has become a very popular place for people to shoot videos particularly the area that is covered in graffiti.

Media Blog Post 8 - Favorite Past Video

My favorite past video from a piece of media coursework has to be Krept and Konan - The Other Side , which was done by Emmanuel , Ariadna , Yuksel and Joshua. This video done last year by the A2's has received critical acclaim by all who have seen it and for good reason. There is very little wrong with this video. It incorporates the narrative used in music video , two friends who have lost someone. This storytelling is relatable to most people as almost everyone has lost someone. They also add appropriates elements of the genre as Krept and Konan were formally grime artists.

Media Blog post 7 - YouGovProfiler

Skepta
Skepta is a UK grime artist born in Tottenham. Known as one of the best Grime artists ever he has achieved world wide recognition basically on his own , without the help of a label. Recently he has been bringing the often rejected genre of Grime to the USA with the help of world famous artist Drake. With the help of his recent song 'Shutdown' Sketpa's name has become bigger and bigger with every passing day. However the question remains who are his fans and where are they from?

According to YouGov Skepta's fans , as expected , are mostly in the UK , London specifically. This is followed by Yorkshire and East Anglia. The age range of his fans are between the ages of 18-24 so mostly young adults. The gender is also majority males. Their social grade is 'C2DE' meaning that they are a part of the lower social group in society. This is often seen as the slums or the hood of London.

Media Blog Post 4: Andrew Goodwin

Main Points
 • Music (Pop) videos are built around the song lyrics – not traditional narrative structures (Normality – Problem – The resolution).
 • The singer is used in the video as both the narrator and character.
 • The singer breaks the 4th wall by looking directly into the camera – this involves the viewer.

Illustration – This is where the video tells the story of lyrics.
Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull – On the floor is a simple but perfect example. The lyrical content is about enjoying the night, dancing and having fun. The video shows them enjoying the night, dancing and having fun ‘On the floor’. The video does exactly what the lyrics claim and while it may be a simple story it is done well.

Amplification- This is where the video tells the story of the lyrics. Dance is often used to express feelings. A good example is The Black Eyed Peas – Where is the love. While dancing is not used in this to show feelings in this the actual music video does just that. The video portrays the world’s problems I.e. police brutality, gang violence, and racism aswell as government corruption. The lyrics are coupled with these visual images with things being said like ‘If you have love for your own race then you only leave space to discriminate’ and ‘But we still got terrorist here living, in the USA, The big CIA, The bloods and the crips and the KKK

Disjuncture - This is where the music video and the lyrics of the song have little or no connection. An example of this is Omarion featuring Chris Brown and Jhene Aiko – Post to be. It can be said the lyrics of the song are about various things however in general ‘Being where you are supposed to be’ in terms of money, fame and women. However the video really doesn’t show any of this as it is mostly the three artist dancing in front of a white background.

Media Blog Post 5: Carol Vernallis

• Narrative in music videos is not always complete
 • Music videos are not always balanced between performance and narrative
 • Music videos don’t always have narrative resolution at the end
• Music videos often pose questions in the narrative that are not answered within the video.

Flo-Rida - Low Slow-motion The use of Slow-motion in this comes in at the start of the song. Flo-Rida is walking into the club and the slow motion forces the viewer to be solely locked onto him, to emphasis his importance in the song.

Base tracks Base track is the singer is in one location in the video. The contents of the video pass and we return to the artist back in that same location. This is shown repeatedly within the song.

Special effect editing Special effects editing doesn’t appear in many music videos however the ones that it does appear it often enhances them. It often ranges from a crazy mixture of colours, or can be something as simple as a small explosion or a group of zombies.

Jump Cuts The jump cut is used in almost all editing from Broadcast narratives and music videos. It is a cut taking from two positions that only vary slightly.

Media Log Post 6: Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey’s theory on representation discusses how women are viewed in the media. She says that women are displayed objectively in all forms of media such as magazines and music videos. She believes that women feel they need to be half naked in order to succeed and that the way men look at them is normal. As a strong feminist her belief is that the physical attributes of a woman shouldn’t lead to her success. Nicki Minaj is a prime example of women using their bodies for success. Despite obtain millions and millions of success it is argued the root of her success is from her body. She has made herself a sex object, something impossible for girls to think they need to achieve and something for men to stare at and believe that is all women are. Another example would be Beyonce. Often described as one of the most powerful women on earth, Beyonce’s main source of success comes from her body. She even has her own religion called ‘Beyism’. However much like Nicki Minaj, it is wrongly giving men the right to objectify women and giving girls an unrealistic task of beauty according to Laura’s theory.

However not all women use their bodies for fame. There are those who rely only on their voice literally. Artists like Adele have been renowned for their voices over their beauty. Having many smash hits including Rolling in the deep and sky fall.
From this we can understand that while women may be objectified in most forms of media, there are those who have broken above these new stigmas and proven success can be found regardless of one’s body type or the amount of men staring at you.

Media Blog Post 3: What is the function of a music video?

Music videos have had many purposes since their inception in the 1970s. Firstly a music video is a videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually with dancing and visual images to aid. The purpose of music videos often range however the main one is to promote the single, the album and the artist all in one. To achieve this, the music video must:
 • Sell the song in a manner the audience can remember it from the video.
 • To entertain the viewer
• To show off the talents of the artist I.e. Dancing, singing and performing.

A good example of a Music video that does this is ‘How many times’ by Dj Khaled, Chris Brown, Big Sean and Lil Wayne This video is a prime example of how music videos help artists. It involves dancing from the artists, Chris Brown in particular. It also displays their talents, in this case singing and rapping as well as providing an entertaining experience for the viewer due to the videos visual designs. An example of the music video successfully promoting is Chris Brown and Lil Wayne would go on to perform How many Times in various clubs and concerts soon after the release.

15) - Shortlist of songs

These songs were selected due to how much we like them. You can never really go wrong with any of Krept and Konan's music.

We all have a taste for grime music, which is why we wanted this to be the genre of music we choose to do. We had to then eleminate until we eached a final decision.

Why Roses was inthe short lsit?
This was due to the fact that idf we were to use this song, we could have each member of our group as per of the filming too. Due to the fact that there are three artists in feating the song, so it would make a lot of sense. We all all have a fair opporunity to experience what its like to me a music artist in front of the camera. And simply because the song is beautiful.

Why 10 Minutes was short listed?
Joel is a massive fan of his, due to the fact that they are both from South London and both Ghanaian. So he could really get into his elliment if he was to take onthe acting role of Stormzy. The song itself is hype and engergic which we liked the sound of.

Wht Wickedskengman4 was short listed?
Its one of stormzy's recent mixtapes. That has got a hype at the momment. The actual video itself is full of banter and just seems like its going to be fun to work on.

Why I'm fine was short listed?
This could have allowed the boys to have fum and get into the whole grime theme they wanted. The song is quite catcchy and its just something to dance too. It would have been a fun music video to re-create.
