Media Blog Post 3: What is the function of a music video?

Music videos have had many purposes since their inception in the 1970s. Firstly a music video is a videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually with dancing and visual images to aid. The purpose of music videos often range however the main one is to promote the single, the album and the artist all in one. To achieve this, the music video must:
 • Sell the song in a manner the audience can remember it from the video.
 • To entertain the viewer
• To show off the talents of the artist I.e. Dancing, singing and performing.

 A good example of a Music video that does this is ‘How many times’ by Dj Khaled, Chris Brown, Big Sean and Lil Wayne This video is a prime example of how music videos help artists. It involves dancing from the artists, Chris Brown in particular. It also displays their talents, in this case singing and rapping as well as providing an entertaining experience for the viewer due to the videos visual designs. An example of the music video successfully promoting is Chris Brown and Lil Wayne would go on to perform How many Times in various clubs and concerts soon after the release.
