She has a strong set of view of the way women are represented in music videos, or in media in general. This is influence by the fact that we are still living in a patriarchal society, where men objectify women and this is clearly visual in many music genre music videos, like those on RnB and Hip Hop.

 



The irony of the song Holiday- Dizzee Rascal, is that it actually shows the male gaze in the video from a character. Which you can see above. So it just shows that this is meant to be a normal occurring thing in society today. So its okay to sexualise and objectify a women and its a norm? Madting!

When you think of this theory, it really does add up. Even some of the best female artists in this industry are portrayed as this. For instance Nicki Minaj, she is right out there and so open to it, at the same time it's understandable though, its by all means to get the most views, in order to get loads of revenue and a wider fan base. Her assets really do a lot for her! 

      

5)Carol Vernallis

She had an interest of how editing and the camera work of video music worked, as it was so different from those of a film. As they came more frequent and focused on different things too. How you usually notice it is by the obvious disjuncture, or that the edit appears with a change in the rhyme change.

 1) The use of continuity editing to draw you to the screen and to what is happening.
Fact: This video is a true story of this artist's life, everything from his step father, to the death of his cousin. Honestly so emotion and it really is one of my fav songs at the moment. Big up Bugzy, Manchester has got talent too!

2) Obvious edits of such things like special effects or fade in/out, to purposefully draw attention to the artist.
   
In this video, throughout, the use of special effect is the animation of the video, rather having real life images. I find this so creative of JME, he exploring new ways of portraying his music, good on him.

3) Jump cuts, to either speed things up (so you get the full or the most important part of the story it’s telling the audience) and the movement from one scene to another.
I absolutely love the use of jump cuts in this music video. I find it extremely insightful and they are so symbolic.

4) The use of master shot, or in other words base track. This is method used to help the video have a structure and it is consistently repeated throughout.
In this video alone there is roughly 9 base tracks used. Which is a typical number for this element, as it is usually around 8/9.


5) The camera moves in sync with the music (sometimes). It helps the give it a rhythm.
In the first 10 seconds, you see the sync of the music with the camera movement.

6)Use of slow motion in a video.
In the first 50 seconds, the use you of slow motion is in sync with the music, as the voice is chopped and screwed to work well with the images you see on the screen.

4)Andrew Goodwin

He had a different approach when it came to music videos and their meanings, which he expressed with many explanations. He felt as though the traditional way of making music videos especially those that are pop videos, didn't apply with the conventions the industry first started with. In most cases he saw them completely contradict them or alter them in one way or another. So what are the reasons why exactly you may be asking?

First and for most, the media content of a film or novel differentiates from that of a music video. As the music video is assembled around the song.

 2) The video uses the artist as either a narrator or as a character or in some cases as both.


3) The artist tends to stare right at the camera, usually used as a method to form a connection with the audience, so make them feel involved, or to encourage some sort of reaction to the view, physically or emotionally.


Have you noticed the amount of repetition? It’s a consistency  that empathise something. Usually to sell a product, to promote awareness, to promote the artist themselves, by all mean to make capital £££ or fame, due  to the fact that it’s either played on TV, aired on the radio, on YouTube or produced for a film. I'm talking about the intertextuality of the lyrics (e.g. chorus) and images. By all means helping to identify and familiarise to a specific genre of music, because you internalise and subconsciously build expectations.     

In most cases they would have a beginning and end within the roughly 3 ½ minute and this will be illustrated through the video in the performance or sound or both. Which is either designed to have a climax to gradually fade away after a constant repetition.

It’s interesting how some music videos have images or performance that are so different from the lyrics of the song. But that of course it done for a purpose. As that visualisation has more meaning than you actually thing, actually try to figure out what it is trying to tell you.

For instance, if there’s a song that you like or show some interest in and you watch the video and its performance/image is telling another story, it will draw in more views, maybe because people are trying to figure it out because they don’t understand or because for some odd reason you may find it more appealing. And whiles we’re busy doing this, these views are generating popularity for the song/artist and making them money too.

There are three elements that show the variation between music videos:

1) Illustration, this is when the performance/image reflects the lyrics that is being sung/rapped.


2) Amplification, this is when the performance/lyrics doesn’t differ from each other, it in fact add more depth and meaning to the song than without it.


3) Disjuncture, this is where there’s clearly no way that the lyrics and performance are trying to portray the same thing. They are completely two separate things.


Genres like Hip Hop/RnB/Heavy metal tend to nearly almost feature women in their videos in objective way, so that they are dismembered and desired sexually by men.

 However, whiles the typically convention for a female artist is to be passive whiles this occurs, this is not the case for these artists, as they stare right back as the camera, suggesting that its done purposefully. It’s like luring the male audience they have deeper.

Instruments also have influence over some music videos, usually if a specific instrument is played, an image or performance is shown as a representation.

Every artist/video has a target (core) audience, but that doesn't stop them from trying to reach a wider audience.

When a video is created to promote a film, it usually incorporates images of the film throughout it. For the following films, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug  Fast and Furious 7 ; Mad Max ; Step up ; Dream girls.  ;

Analysis of the Video:

The use of slow motion is beautiful throughout the entire video. There's use of fast motion during the driving scene.
The use of discontinued editing is so precise it looks completely seamless.
Close up are also used to symbolise things and add empathise on a particular moment:
Some of them are clsoe ups of her face, in order to show her emtion, to connect herself to the lyrics, as if the song is speaking her feelings. There are other of a blunt and smoke, as reference to her use of drug and as if it was like a relife of some sort or her way of expressing their happy moments together when they used to get intoxicated with one another. There's a few of one when her holding/pulling away from a man's hand. It to me is the symbolise of love and war. Loving someone you can't be with. Its like an internal conflict she faces, but here se actually shows it through the proformance. That is a example of the use of symbolic techiques.

Now the message about the video I gathered:
Its about her past relationship, in particular with Chris Brown. I feel as though the song is about them, referring to the two as diamonds. The scene with the sea is a symbolism of how deep her emotions are and that its so hard for her to get to the depth of her feelings. Though they didn't end in the best of ways, she still wants him to do well in life within his fame and what not. It feels like its her way of saying to the media, fair enough he messed up but everyone is at fault one time or another and you learn from it, that they dont understand that though he hurt her, she will still want the best for him, when everyone clearly wants her to have nothing to do with him. She accepts that they will never be the same but that doesn't mean a frienship can't blossom. Theres lots of reference of drugs, implying the participation of the use of them they used to do together, "moonshine / molly / ecstasy" indicating that it made them better and stronger as a person when using them, they had no care in the word, it was like them against the world.
